Theoretical physicists from Russia and Brazil are working together on a theory that describes novel superconducting materials with potentially high critical temperatures. The theory can explain many properties of superconductors with non-trivial topological properties, as well as of those with multiple condensates. In this interview, Prof. Mauro Doria from the Institute of Physics at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Prof. Alexei Vagov from the Centre for Quantum Metamaterials, MIEM HSE, talk about their cooperation.

A school focusing on the digitalisation of public administration for civil servants from African countries was held in Moscow in December 2023. The school proved the high demand for Russian training programmes — representatives of 23 countries and 3 international organisations received certificates following advanced training.

A team from HSE University's Faculty of Urban and Regional Development took part in the Global Mayor’s Forum—a global event in urban development. Held in December 2023 in Guangzhou (PRC), the largest congress of urban planners brought together more than 800 guests from 65 cities and 37 countries, as well as nine international organisations.

In December, the HSE Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge and the HSE AI Research Centre participated in UNCTAD eWeek to discuss the future of the emerging digital economy. One of the topics discussed during the conference was artificial intelligence and its applications in driving the digital transformation of industry sectors. The session was co-organised by HSE University.

On December 15, the Second Sino-Russian Economic Cooperation Workshop–Youth Forum took place online. The event was organised jointly by HSE University and the Shanghai University School of Economics. Anastasia Stepanova, Deputy Vice Rector of HSE University, Associate Professor at the School of Finance, and one of the workshop organisers, talked to the HSE News Service about cooperation with Shanghai University and the topics covered by the workshop.

On November 24–25, 2023, the 12th ICEF-CInSt International Finance Conference took place in Moscow. Researchers from Russia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the USA, Canada, Italy, and the United Kingdom contributed as speakers and discussants. The organisers and participants of the conference shared their impressions of the event with the HSE News Service.

The III Young Scientists Congress took place in the Sirius Science and Art Park on November 28–30, 2023. On the first day of the forum, a discussion was held on the tools and opportunities for engaging international early-career researchers in Russian science. The meeting was organised by HSE University together with members of the Association of Global Universities.

An international team, including researchers from the Russian Academy of Sciences Institute for Information Transmission Problems, HSE University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, analysed the approaches used to optimise the data transfer rates of TCP and QUIC protocols in high-frequency wireless networks. According to the scientists, cross-layer solutions provide the highest gains in data transfer rates. The paper has been published in IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials, one of the most influential international journals in the field of telecommunications, boasting an impressive impact factor of 35.6.

The interrelation between the tasks of maintaining peace, preserving sovereignty, and ensuring gas supplies, the role of external players, Russia’s strategy in relation to the energy industries in Mediterranean countries in the changed economic and political context—these and other topics were discussed by the participants of the international scientific conference ‘Russia and the Greater Mediterranean 2023. HSE University is taking part in the Annual International Conference and Global Summit (AICGS-2023), which began in Phagwara, India, on October 30. This year’s topic of discussion was the new model of international cooperation in the field of sustainable development, as well as the prospects and global challenges faced by universities in the development of international ties today.
